Via Vogue.it: We all know Solange as the young sister of superstar Beyoncé but over the past few years, the other Knowles as some media outlets like to call her, has been making a name of her own. In fashion she is part of that small circle of black women who know how to take dressing up to the next level.
Solange Knowles doesn’t mince words. “There are a lot of songs about sex,” she says of her new album, a personal project she funded and managed herself. “It’s the kind of record you put on when your man is coming over, when you’re with your girls. There are songs that make you wanna dance because we were kind of partying our way through the record, but it’s very chill.” Knowles worked with a few new friends on the album, forgoing the major label route to make a statement that is entirely her own. Along the way, she found a fated collaborator in Blood Orange’s Devonte “Dev” Hynes. “Dev was a complete surprise, his role changed substantially throughout the process,” she says of the rising star, who wound up producing most of the record. “It’s very rare that you work with someone with whom you have this creative chemistry, it’s almost like a relationship. You have a sort of musical love affair.”
Working with Hynes, Vincent Vendetta of the Midnight Juggernauts, Ariel Reichstadt, and polishing things up with Pharrell, Knowles aims for a pop-soul sound that’s equal parts progressive and throwback. “My references for the record were all Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, not just their typical Janet and Prince stuff, but SOS Band and their b-sides with Chaka Khan. At first the songs were really dark because I had a premonition before the record that I was going to die. I was having panic attacks and wiling out.” Once the team realized a house they had rented in Santa Barbara to record in had a bad vibe—to put it bluntly—they relocated to L.A. and saw a light at the end of the tunnel.
Via NYPost.com: “Perfect day at the park. Love my hood. #Brooklyn,” she tweeted last fall.
The down-to-earth sister even threw a birthday party for her son in a public park and has been spotted eschewing first class to fly coach.
Solange spends many evenings DJ’ing at Brooklyn Bowl in Williamsburg, and frequents unpretentious neighborhood eateries like Buttermilk Channel on Court Street.
During an interview with US Magazine Solange opened about Beyonce’s auntie skills and setting the tone as a mother.
Check out the excerpts below:
“My sister is a phenomenal aunt, so I’m ready to be the same in her life,”I don’t need any advice [on how to be a great aunt],” Solange gushed. “Because she has been a phenomenal aunt to my [7-year-old son Julez], so she’s set the tone as an aunt. I’ve set the tone as a mom, so we’re learning from each other.”
As for who will be the better aunt? “Well, I’m sure my son would say she’s the better aunt because I’m a mom first,” she said. “I do realize that popcorn at 9:00 at night probably would make me the better aunt in his eyes.”
Solange and Beyonce’s relationship is awesome. Miss Sol-Angel, is always supporting her sister even when shots are taken at her. She will always be there to defend and stan for Bey, like true sisters should always do. I’ve seen that myself via twitter.

Q: Now you are the face of Rimmel, how do you feel about so many women looking up to you as a role model?
I am very careful of ever putting the role model tag on my shoulders. I am human and I am expected to have imperfections and make mistakes. However, if there are positive things I do that inspire or influence people I feel like my purpose as a person is that much more fulfilled. When I announced my role with Rimmel, I felt really proud to see such a positive response especially being that I represent someone of color, a single mom, an artist…and that I don’t have to compromise my views to do so!
